politicized somatics: unmasking your body from cishetero- and neurotypical norms
in this "introduction to somatics" blog post, you'll discover how politicized somatics supports queer liberation, and how to reclaim your body from years of ADHD burnout & masking Autism.
for many of us—queer and trans people, neurodivergent folks, and women—the body has historically been a site of surveillance, medicalization, or performance. when society tells you that your way of being is “too much” or “not enough,” your body instinctively shapes itself to take up less space, and your nervous system pays the price.
you might experience this as a persistent “floating head” feeling, chronic tension in your jaw and neck, or the deep exhaustion of burnout. these aren’t just personal failings; they are the physical symptoms of systemic pressures. this is where the transformative power of politicized somatics can help you become aware of this shaping and reshape your embodied self.
understanding our shaping
politicized somatics acknowledges that our bodies do not exist in a vacuum. we are literally shaped by our lived experiences, including the enduring imprints of cisheteronormativity and ableism.
if you have spent a lifetime masking your Autism or ADHD just to stay safe, your body has learned to prioritize hypervigilance over authentic expression. physically, this might look like:
- tightening your muscles to suppress self-soothing stimming behaviors;
- the frantic, internal buzz of trying never to be late in a world built for neurotypical time;
- the exhaustion of memorizing and rehearsing social scripts not to “look stupid” in a social interraction.
emotionally, we are shaped by bottling up our feelings to avoid being labeled “too sensitive” or “too weird,” or by cutting off our needs to ensure the comfort of others.
to understand this, we use the “sites of shaping” model from the Strozzi Institute. imagine yourself, as an individual with your unique story and lived experience, at the center of several concentric circles. you are shaped by:
- family/intimate network: how your family system taught you to be loved and how you can belong.
- community: the customs and expectations of the people around you.
- institution: schools, healthcare, and workplaces.
- social norms and historical forces: patriarchy, white supremacy, and ableism, to name a few, but also the history of queer resistance, feminism, and disability justice.
- spirit and landscape: your connection to the earth and the mystery of life, however you might (not) define it. a place to draw resilience from that holds everything else.
each circle shapes the ones inside it. but here is the power of this work: each circle is also a site of change. when you change your individual “shape,” you begin to shift the culture of the circles around you. and the bigger the circle, the more people are needed to change it. that’s why somatics is often used in building collective power in organizing and activist spaces.
so, politicized somatics provides a body-oriented approach to examine these patterns. it is a “bottom-up” approach that moves beyond talking about your problems and into the “felt-sense” of your experience while staying aware of the socio-political impacts. by working with a Strozzi-trained coach, you begin to decouple your sense of safety from your need to perform for the outside world, and start finding safety and choice in your body. this is the heart of somatic transformation.
the benefits of somatic coaching for queer and neurodivergent bodies
engaging in this work is more than just “stress management,” it is an act of sovereignty. when you choose to inhabit your body fully, you are reclaiming your inner landscape that was once used for survival.
because trauma and oppression often involve the loss of choice, i move slowly and prioritize consent above all else. trauma impacts the body by making it feel unsafe to say “no” or even to know what “yes” feels like. in our sessions, we “move at the pace of trust,” (to quote adrienne maree brown) ensuring your body never feels forced to soften before they are ready.
here are just some of the things somatics can help you with:
- nervous system regulation: learn to move out of the “fight-flight-freeze” or “fawn” responses and into a state of grounded presence;
- embodied unmasking: get to know the mask from the inside by identifying the physical sensations of masking like the contractions used to stay still, and practice returning to your authentic baseline.
- gender euphoria: for those navigating gender transition or questioning their expression (whether trans of not!), we explore how armorings in your body might be shaped by socially gendered expectations. we move beyond just noticing gender dysphoria and explore what brings you joy on a felt-sense level, independent of social expectations. finally, we build the capacity to trust that internal “yes” and take actions from that truth.
- sexual(ity) exploration: through somatic awareness, we practice the mechanics of consent. we explore what “yes,” “no,” and “maybe” feel like in your tissues. we work on trusting pleasure and can even explore how different kink practices might help you reclaim power and agency in a safe, contained way.
- burnout recovery: move through the heavy shutdown of burnout by building sustainable somatic habits. we learn to resource ourselves, finding safety in the body to slowly come back online without overwhelm.
- interoceptive awareness: reconnect with your internal signals—hunger, boundaries, and joy—that may have been silenced by years of survival.
moving from survival to sovereignty
the goal of this work is not to fix you, but to expand your capacity for life, including the one inside you. integrity is about wholeness—embodying all parts of yourself, including the parts you have been shaped to hide or taught to feel most ashamed of. when we welcome these parts back, we become less fragmented and can embody our holistic power.
whether we meet in person in Tallinn, Estonia or via online sessions, do a somatic coaching or a bodywork session, we focus on your embodied transformation by using the same methodology. i break down the methodology of somatic transformation in the next post.
by centering your dignity and agency, somatic coaching and bodywork help you shift from a body that is reacting to a body that has more choice to respond. you deserve to move through the world not as a strategy for survival, but as a radical expression of your aliveness.
